Cosmetic dentistry could be aided by aloe vera

Cosmetic dentistry could be complemented by the healing properties of aloe vera, according to recent research.

A report published in the 2009 issue of Cosmetic Dentistry has revealed that aloe vera tooth gel proved at least to be equally effective than two commercially available toothpastes when it came to controlling cavity-causing organisms.

Aloe vera tooth gel that contains the stabilised substance found in the centre of the plant was used during the research, and could be suitable for people with sensitive teeth or gums.

AGD spokesperson Eric Shapria commented: "Thankfully, consumers with sensitive teeth or gums have a number of choices when it comes to their oral health, and aloe vera is one of them.

"If they are interested in a more alternative approach to oral hygiene, they should speak with their dentist to ensure that it meets the standards of organised dentistry, too."

Aloe vera is a succulent plant that has healing properties, which can be used to treat ailments such as diabetes and wounds.
