Dentist: Root canal a form of cosmetic dentistry?

While some shudder at the thought of experiencing a root canal, the procedure can improve dental health and maintain an attractive smile.

One of Bergen County, New Jersey's dentists, Dr. Sultan Sherzoy feels that this kind of proceure can be considered cosmetic dentistry because its better for people to keep their natural teeth, rather than opt for false ones or implants.He says that he and his team aim to help each patient "preserve [all] natural teeth for a lifetime" and if a root canal is needed, it should not seem as scary as many would suggest.

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), a root canal saves an otherwise healthy tooth once its soft tissue, or the nerve pulp, is damaged.Rather than leave the diseased or damaged nerve pulp in the tooth, the dentist will remove this and then seal, clean and protect the tooth with a crown.

Disease enters the tooth if it becomes decayed. One way to help prevent tooth decay is to brush teeth and floss twice each day, plus visit the dentist on a regular basis, the ADA suggests.
